It was fifty outside, freezing for the summer solstice. Waves of rain whipped the Island with winds gusting over forty. No mercy in sight. Martha’s Vineyard was under siege. Cold fronts are not rare in June. We had handled them many times before, by fishing the south side of the Island or tucked up into the salt pond, but that wasn’t going to work this time around. This was no ordinary front; this was a nor’easter. The only good news was, it arrived on the last day of our trip. In the morning we would be pulling stakes and heading off-Island. We had been there two weeks, hunting striped bass, and done fairly well. Still, we hated missing this final bit of fishing. The last night on the Island was an important part of our trip. It was a bittersweet angling moment, made poignant by the knowledge we would not be back for a year. We would wade, discussing all that had happened during the trip. It was a chance to cap things, sort through what would soon be wonderful memories. Instead, we were sitting on our duffs killing time. Desperate for a diversion, we decided to take a drive. With the wipers tapping time we went to Lobsterville on the north side of the Island. It was a mess. You...

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — I imagine most reporters have a dream interview that they fantasize about from time to time. Maybe they want to interview the president of the United States. Perhaps they would love to go back in time and sit down with a famous figure from history. While as a lover of history that certainly sounds intriguing, for this reporter, Julius Caesar, Sun Tzu and George Washington have nothing on my dream interview subject: Rotor Fred. Right now most of you are probably scratching your head, but if you’re one of the few who know whom I’m talking about, your pulse probably shot up a bit. I became aware of Fred – also referred to as the “Rotor Man” – for the first time when I was about eight years old, on a family trip to the former Geauga Lake Amusement Park in Aurora. The park closed in 2007, but for a kid growing up in the late 1980s, a visit to Geauga Lake was always one of the highlights of summer. Next to the Ferris Wheel was the Rotor, a ride that never attracted much interest, although it was a mainstay at the park for as long as I can remember. It was quite simple. Kids and adults entered a round, rubber-padded room through a door that swung in from the outside....

Claas reveals tracked Jaguar 960 self-propelled forager – NEWS

Designed to spread the weight of the forager, particularly when working with large maize headers, Claas has developed a tracked version of the Jaguar 960. Taking inspiration from the Terra Trac system fitted to the company’s Lexion combines, Claas has become the first forage harvester manufacturer to launch a factory fitted track option. First previewed at the 2017 Agritechnica, Claas says the tracked version of the forager will appeal to contractors who harvest maize on marginal and difficult land and AD units growing crops on rented land, where limiting compaction is a priority. Three track widths are available 635mm, 735mm and 890mm. Total width of the machine on the narrowest tracks is under three metres, while on the widest set the total width is still under 3.5 metres. Hydro-pneumatic suspension on the track unit keeps the operator protected from bumps in the road and the track unit can oscillate 10 degrees upwards and 13 degrees down to ride over any undulations. Road speed is 40kph. To accommodate the extra length needed to fit the track units, the body of the forager has been extended by 1,000mm. This has enabled access to the internals of the machine to be improved, wi...

Vast amounts of energy are needed to synthesize the hundreds of millions of tons of chemicals

Vast amounts of energy are needed to synthesize the hundreds of millions of tons of chemicals used in everyday life each year. To meet that demand, the chemical industry uses the energy released during fuel combustion, thereby producing a seventh of the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. Climate change makes it mandatory to replace fossil fuels in chemical production processes and reduce their climate impact (1–3). On page 756 of this issue, Wismann et al. (4) focus on reducing the CO2 emissions created during the production of molecular hydrogen (H2), a key building block for ammonia-derived fertilizers, through steam reforming of methane. This industrial process releases 9 kg of CO2 per kg of H2, a quarter of which comes from fuel combustion.
